 Seafarers' Advice & Information Line

Seafarers' Advice & Information Line

Seafarers’ Advice & Information Line (SAIL) is a Citizens Advice service dedicated to seafarers and their families across the UK. All their advice is free and confidential.
SAIL have been advising merchant seafarers and fisherman for 20 years, and are now expanding to to support veterans and serving personnel from the Royal Navy, and their partners. This would include members of the Huddersfield Branch of the Royal Naval Association.

  • All advice is free and confidential. SAIL gives advice on the phone, by email and by letter.
  • They are independent from the government, and from the Royal Navy and Royal Marines.
  • SAIL can also give advice to organisations directly helping seafarers, without needing to know the identity of the seafarer being supported.
  • SAIL advisers are all professional and fully trained. They understand the particular problems seafarers and their dependants face.

SAIL can give advice on many different issues, for example, problems with pensions and benefits, consumer issues, housing problems, charity grants, debt, what to do when someone dies and many more. All our advisers are professional and fully trained.

Seafarers’ Advice & Information Line is now able to offer free advice to the Royal Navy and Royal Marines all across the UK.

SAIL will be adding an adviser to its team of five, with funding for the new post coming from Greenwich Hospital, the Navy's Crown Charity since 1694.

SAIL’s advisers will be able to advise veterans and serving Royal Navy and Royal Marines, and their partners.

They can also help ex-partners of seafarers when they’re caring for the children of a seafarer.

SAIL can give advice on all of these and many more -

  • Debt and money problems
  • Housing
  • Employment
  • Maritime charity grants

  • Immigration
  • Pension problems

The advice lines are open between 10:00 and 16:00 on weekdays, with an answer phone service at other times. Call 08457 413 318 or 020 3597 1580. You can request an immediate call back if the call is expensive for you.
